船舶稳性是指船舶所具有的抵抗外力不使其倾覆当外力消失后能回复到原平衡位置的能力。在船舶营运过程中船舶稳性是船员重点考虑的一大要素在船舶营运过程中相关参数经常变化如果不能够准确地把握船舶稳性将对船舶安全造成重大隐患。　　装卸重大件货物导致的船舶倾斜翻沉多与货物移动时的稳性计算问题有关。由于货物从船上卸下或货物装载上船时船舶的静稳性曲线下移船舶大倾角稳性以及动稳性也会随之降低因此装卸货是稳性最容易被破坏的情况之一。　　9月18日凌晨一艘集装箱船就在土耳其伊斯肯德伦港的卸货作业中失去了稳性而沉没船上多数集装箱落入水中即使岸上人员抓紧时间抢救也无济于事。　　据外国媒体报道9月17日夜间或9月18日清晨满载着集装箱的普通货船SEA EAGLE在土耳其伊斯肯德伦港进行卸货作业时失去了稳性船舶倾斜且沉没。　　SEA EAGLE是一艘1984年建造的集装箱船长81米宽15米悬挂多哥船旗。　　据船员回忆该船是事发当晚到达的土耳其伊斯肯德伦港。在确认靠泊完成后船上所有船员都在忙于卸货工作。就在一切正常进行时船上船员发现船舶突然间明显地倾斜了一下!　　随后船长马上发现由于失去稳性船舶倾斜后船内迅速涌进了大量海水。船长立刻采取措施试图让船舶回归正常位置。　　但是在经过多次尝试后船舶的倾斜越来越明显船长此刻判断该船有倾覆的风险于是立刻下令组织船员从船上撤离。　　同时岸上的工作人员也发现了船舶倾斜的问题在采取安全措施的同时试图通过加快卸货营救船上仍未卸下的集装箱货物。然而卸货速度仍然赶不上货船倾覆的速度最终大量的集装箱沉入水中。
